Animated Art

6th August 2006

Starting this article is difficult - very difficult. Not because I don't know what to say, but because I don't know how to word it with just. I recently discovered a series of animations online. They go by the title of the main character; Salad Fingers, a decidedly spooky, green-skinned man with a genuine personality but obvious disturbed mental problems. To provide a summery of these animations that will justify to you their nature or meaning is near impossible; they will no doubt produce a different reaction in every person who watches them. You may love them or hate them, become frustrated by them or simply respect them for what they are; fucking good works of animated art. I fall into the latter category.

It is clear that the creator of Salad Fingers, David Firth, has taken his time with each episode. These are no normal animations. Do not expect the friendly humour of The Simpsons or a beautifully animated 'happily every after' Disney tale. They are an exploration of the human mind in its grittiest, more uncensored form. The character, his personality, the mood of the drawings, everything; it is sad, intimate, thoughtful, honest, and downright disturbing, all at the same time.

I've listed my favourite episodes below. Watch them but resist the initial urge to click the back button as I did. Also monitor on your reactions; it will be interesting to see just how you feel after each episode.

Ok so I watched the first one, and I don't really know what to make of it. I thought the animation was good though. I can't say that I was disturbed by it, but I can see why you would think that. Just seems like a very dark storyline going on.

I love it. Came across Salad Fingers a while back and thought the animation and soundtrack were superb.

I thought the plots were somehow deeply disturbing... but it does it for me.

My college buddy insisted I watch this and I immediately feel in love with the episodes! It brings out the weirdest feelings that we are so scared! I truly enjoy watching SALAD FINGERS and the uniqueness created by such human emotions!
